Full grain

Leather Naturally, an industry resource, defines full grain leather as leather made from the top layer of the hide or skin.

Split leather

When a hide is split, the layer underneath the top is called split leather. It is mostly used to make suede.

Top grain

"Top grain" is a common label term. The FTC Guides use it in their examples, such as "Top Grain Cowhide". Ask the maker what they mean by it.

What the label does not tell you

Grain words describe the layer. They do not tell you how a boot was made or how it will wear.

Layers of a hide. Top layer, then the split.

FAQ

We make no such claim. It describes the layer, not the boot.
Suede is often made from split leather, per Leather Naturally.

General information only. Follow the boot maker's care instructions and the directions on any care product. Test a product on a hidden spot first, because some products can darken leather.
