Goodyear welt

A strip called the welt is stitched to the upper and to a rib on the insole. The outsole is then stitched to the welt. One shoemaker's guide explains that this lets a cobbler replace the outsole without disturbing the upper.

Blake stitch

One row of stitching goes through the outsole, the insole, and the upper. The same guide says resoling it needs a Blake stitching machine, which not every cobbler has.

Cemented

The sole is glued on. Ask the maker or a cobbler whether it can be replaced.

Resoling

Ask a cobbler to look at the welt, the upper, and the heel before you decide. Resoling depends on the boot's condition.

Look for stitching around the edge of the sole, or ask the maker.

General information only. Follow the boot maker's care instructions and the directions on any care product. Test a product on a hidden spot first, because some products can darken leather.
