How boots should fit

Sizes vary between makers. Check the fit, not just the number.

Use the maker's size guide

Boot sizes and widths are not the same across makers. Start with the maker's own size guide.

Wear your usual socks

Try boots on with the socks you plan to wear.

What to check

  • Length. Your toes should not press against the front.
  • Width. The widest part of your foot should not feel squeezed.
  • Heel. Some heel lift can be normal in a new boot. Ask the maker what to expect.
  • Instep. Laces or the shaft should hold your foot without pressing hard on top.

If something hurts

Pain is a sign to try another size or width. Do not count on a boot stretching.

Check the return policy

Try boots indoors on a clean floor so you can return them if they do not fit.

Four fit checks. Use the maker's size guide.
